About:

This is the biggest and most complex project I’ve worked on. As one of Brazil’s major news website, it has been in constant expansion since its launch in 2009, growing alongside new technologies and the fast pace of national and global events. When I joined Record’s UI/UX team in 2020, the product had recently gone through a large redesign for its tenth anniversary. Since then, I worked on new features such as election coverages, reality show polls, quizzes, sports championship tables, alongside many other improvements on previous existent features.

Most of R7's audience accesses the platform via mobile phone, but the desktop version is also highly relevant. Therefore, the team constantly strive to optimize the adaptation of all information blocks for both formats. A constant challenge is creating elements that adequately accommodate variations in headline size, which often include the long Brazilian names of politicians or other famous people in their titles.

These are some of the sections within the R7 website. It's a continuous effort to find elements that cater to all of them, in order to maintain a concise design system, while still engaging the diverse audiences interested in each section.

Elections

One of the most important and relatively recent projects I've worked on within the R7 was the coverage page for the 2022 presidential elections, and subsequently the local elections in 2024.

Given the ideological polarization that Brazil has been experiencing in recent years, I knew that by the time we started the project this would be of great relevance to the public. Receiving official data in real time from the vote counts, R7 became one of the main and most credible sources of information for the country's population, who closely followed each update of the coverage.

A Fazenda

Once a year, A Fazenda (The Farm) captures the largest audience of Record TV. This is a reality show where celebrities from various sectors and fields are chosen to spend months on a ranch sharing tasks and challenges, with weekly eliminations until only one champion remains.

Given the scale of R7, the work shown here represents only a partial view of the platform’s overall complexity. Each different editorial section, each engagement method, each new project added to the website could be shown by an exclusive presentation in this portfolio. And the same goes for the Design System: although cohesion is maintained across all products within the product, it is always growing and evolving to adapt to new technologies, viewer needs, new methods of information consumption, and so on. Therefore, what is being displayed here is also far from faithfully representing all its complexity and grandeur.

Since this is the most prominent program within the network's schedule, special attention is given to the website that gathers all kinds of information and updates about the reality show. Partnerships and sponsorships come into play, and the challenge is to attract the audience interested in the news and engage them in various ways, encouraging them to stay on the website.

Engagement

Advertisements, partnerships and sponsorships are largely responsible for the product's revenue, and therefore, it's important to engage the audience. To that end, we develop features to make this experience interesting, intuitive and fluid, offering various ways to keep them on the websites.

When a topic divides opinions, polls emerge to measure and inform how viewers feel:

During the airing of reality shows, quizzes take over interactions with the audience, ranking users through the score obtained in timed questions, encouraging them to return to the websites every time a new event is created:

Newsletters are one of the key players in engagement: for various editorial sections, free subscriptions are offered, regularly inviting the public to return to websites in search of information and entertainment.

I worked on this project for over five years. R7 was already a large platform when I joined the teams and continued to expand throughout this period.

In recent years, changes in how information is consumed, particularly in the context of increased political polarization in Brazil, introduced additional complexity. As one of the most accessed websites in the country, the responsibility to deliver information in an accurate, clear, and timely manner became an even more significant design challenge.

The trust of major brands through sponsorships with Record TV, along with the millions of unique viewers reached each month, serves as a strong indicator of the platform’s scale, relevance, and the consistency of the design work behind it.
